Japanese antique ceramic Noh Theater mask reflects a young noble beauty and a heroine of numerous Japanese folktales Princess CHUJO .
Princess Chujo (Chujo Hime) was a daughter of an imperial minister of the famous Fujiwara family and she lived with her furious stepmother. Chujo is credited with inventing the art of embroidery in that time when she became a nun. Chujo Hime mask represents Japanese traditional Heian era lady monk featuring shaved  head and blackened teeth. This mask is made as an interior wall decoration.

About 1950's, Hakata
Ceramic, gofun ( crashed oyster shell powder), fine hand painting.
Excellent condition with no damage, but with sophisticated antique taste.
