Sugawara no Michizane in exile,
Japanese antique picture on scroll by HOSAI (1848 - 1920),
before 1912
Japanese scroll painting on silk depicts Heian era
scholar Sugawara no Michizane in exile. Full
moon shines softly through the evenings mist, lighting
Michizane's sorrow. He sits on veranda with
open window to the garden in front of an open wooden chest
which is full oft Michizane's latest courtier
clothes. He holds his court attire in his hands and he remembers
his past days A candle's flame sways in the wind.
Michizane was a prominent scholar and political
figure in Heian period Japan (running from 794
to 1185). He was born in aristocratic family and become
well educated scholar, and a professor of literature at
the university and finally acquiring the post of Minister
of the Right, with junior second rank. Through out intrigues
of his enemies at Imperial court, Michizane
was exiled and ended his days two years later. Traditionally
Sugawara no Michizane or Tenjin
honored as the Shinto God of Study and Learning.
Little is known of Japanese painter Hosai
except that he was a Tokyo painter specializing in historical
subjects, who studied with the popular Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
(1839-1892), one of the last of the great Ukiyo-e
artist.
Very good condition overall, with some small stains in upper
part of the scroll (no in painting).
Bone scroll's roller ends. Origami (certificate of autencity)
paper come with.
